An environmental disaster-Exxon Valdez oil spill

The Exxon Valdez oil spill occurred in the Prince William Sound, Alaska, on March 24, 1989. It is considered one of the most devastating human-caused environmental disasters ever to occur at sea. As significant as the Exxon Valdez spill was, it ranks well down on the list of the world's largest oil spill in terms of volume released. However, Prince William Sound's remote location (accessible only by helicopter and boat) made government and industry response efforts difficult and severely taxed existing plans for response. The region was a habitat for salmon, sea otters, seals and seabirds. The vessel spilled 10.8 million U.S. gallons (about 40 million litres) of Prudhoe Bay crude oil into the sea, and the oil eventually covered 11,000 square miles (28,000 km2) of ocean.

That was really bad. Thousands of marine animals were killed, it was equivalent to an earthquake to us. Unlike the economic loss, the break in natural balance is more difficult to recover. So, I think that the people should be more conciderate to this nature. They should not transport oil when there were many icebergs on the sea, though it might cause some economic loss. If people are always so thoughtful about the environment when doing their job, the nature would not be so terrible now.

The time when I suffered from an injury.

There was a time when I was hurt badly at my knee. I fell down heavily when riding a bicycle. After I arrived the nearest clinic, I was helped to take a comfortable seat. The doctor removed my shoes and socks, he washed my knee with water to clean the blood and dirt ,before disinfecting the wound with peroxide. At the moment when the disinfectant touched my wound, I felt a great pain. I had to grit my teeth hard so that I would not shout. The doctor then dried my knee with a tower and wrap it with some clean bandage at last.
However, I still felt discomfortable after the treatment. So I kept talking to others to divert my attention away from the pain.

Why is the use of alternative medicine becoming widespread?

The use of alternative medicine has a lot of advantages. For examples,
1. It allows people to choose suitable treatments for themselves. Some people may prefer traditional medicine for it causes little harm to the body. However, other people may prefer western medicines for it takes effect quikly. Thus, the use of alterative medicine would provide more choices for people.
2. It makes the treatments more effective. Different medicines have different advantages though they may be used to treat the same disease. If we use several medicines simultaneously to cure a patient, the treatment will be very effective.
However, the use of alternative medicine also has some disadvantages. For example, it will cause a negative impact on natural environment. As most medicines are made from plants and through chemical process, the rising need for medicine will reduce the natural resources and increase the pollution caused by the pharmaceutical industry.
